Smartphone Registration in Egypt: Everything You Need to Know Now [October 2025]

·Rafael Gomez

Since the end of September 2025, Egypt has introduced new rules for tourists and travelers who want to use their smartphone with local SIM or eSIM cards. What used to be hassle-free can now quickly lead to a complete network block if you do not register your device in time. Here is a simple explanation of what has changed, how to register your phone correctly in Egypt, and how you can avoid the whole process entirely with a BuddySIM eSIM.

📅 What has changed?

On September 24, 2025, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) published new regulations affecting all foreign travelers.

A few days later, on September 29, 2025, the Egyptian Customs Authority clarified the import rules for mobile phones.

The goal:

➡️ Control over imported devices

➡️ Collection of a “smartphone tax” from tourists

➡️ Crackdown on gray-market imports

📱 Why does this affect you?

If you travel to Egypt and buy an Egyptian SIM card locally (for example from Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat or WE), your phone’s IMEI number is automatically registered in the NTRA system when you insert that card.

This starts a 90-day period. Even if you leave the country, the clock keeps running. During this period, you can use the device without any issues.

After those 90 days have expired, the smartphone is automatically blocked if it has not been registered or taxed.

This also applies if you leave the country in between.

⚠️ Important: The period runs continuously. So if you travel to Egypt several times a year, for example for diving or to spend the winter there, you may suddenly find your phone completely deactivated, even after only a few days in the country.

A similar system has already existed for some time in Turkey.

Who has to register their smartphone in Egypt?

Category Registration required Fees/tax
Egyptian citizens No None
Foreign travelers with a local SIM/eSIM (Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat, WE) Yes (after 90 days) Device-dependent via NTRA/provider
Use with BuddySIM eSIM (international) No None
Devices already registered before 2025 No None

How can I avoid the smartphone block in Egypt?

🧾 Option 1: Officially register your smartphone (NTRA “Telephony” app)

If you are staying in Egypt for longer or traveling there regularly, you need to register your device through the NTRA Telephony app.

🔧 Step-by-step guide:

  1. Download the app
  2. Register your device
  3. When you buy a local SIM, your passport details and IMEI are recorded automatically.
  4. (You can find your IMEI by entering *#06#.)
  5. Pay the fee
  6. The amount depends on the device and can be paid directly with the provider or in the app.
  7. Confirmation by SMS
  8. After payment, you will receive an SMS confirming that your device has been permanently unlocked.

Option 2: BuddySIM eSIM for Egypt, with no smartphone registration at all

The easiest way to completely avoid the new smartphone registration in Egypt is with a BuddySIM eSIM. With it, you are technically never really in Egypt, even though you are using the local network. Note: If you have already been in Egypt in 2025 and used a local SIM, or if your smartphone has already been blocked, the eSIM cannot bypass that block. The eSIM can only avoid the block on your first entry, and that is important to understand.

How does it work?

Our eSIM connects to Egyptian mobile providers (such as Vodafone Egypt or Orange), but all data traffic is routed through European network nodes.

As a result, no IMEI number is recorded and your device never appears in Egypt’s NTRA registration system in the first place.

What that means for you:

  • No registration requirement through the NTRA app
  • No phone tax or additional fees
  • No 90-day block, even with repeated entries
  • Ready to use immediately after purchase
  • ✅ Ideal for divers, frequent travelers or digital nomads

So you avoid all the paperwork, long airport queues and possible network blocks.

Customs rules for smartphones (as of 09/29/2025)

Rule Details
Duty-free allowance 1 personal smartphone duty-free (usable by foreigners for 90 days)
Second device 37.5 % customs duty on Egyptian market value
Additional devices Full import duties; from 5 devices, the import is considered commercial
Registration Imported devices must be registered in the NTRA Telephony app

💡 Conclusion

If you are traveling to Egypt and do not want to register your smartphone, the BuddySIM eSIM is the simplest and safest solution.

You are online right away, use local networks with European routing speed, and do not have to register with either the NTRA or customs.
